Manifesto

«TriP» is the three core characteristics of art.

Art is search. When I want to speak on a certain topic, I blindly assemble my vision, compare it with the vision of others, and amplify our differences. People love to divide/unite into categories. Classification exposes the limits of the world. As soon as an artist finds himself, he turns into a craftsman. Losing himself, the craftsman becomes an artist.

Art is use. Life is too short and unfair to spend it on useless creation. Art must be of use.

Art is a gag. Artists are people who make something cool. The difference is the intonation with which a viewer, looking at the work, says: «Cool.»

My name is Tair Tabiyev. When I wrote this text, I was an artist. Now a craftsman is editing it.

Introduction

Artist-centrist

artist statement

It pisses me off that I have to write this. All these artist statements, manifestos, CVs, concepts. It pisses me off that at exhibitions, works with kilometre-long descriptions get more attention. To me that’s the same as explaining a joke, sorting it onto shelves, breaking it into parts, pointing out where to laugh and why.

I show, I don’t tell. Even in type compositions. I show socio-economic inequality, politics, thinking errors, cognitive distortions, fears, experiences, mockery, thoughts. I am a grouch. I walk down the street and comment on everything I dislike. I mutter under my breath. If I can’t fix the problem, I can at least validate it.

Art is my defence mechanism. Walking into a party of strangers, I take out a notebook and draw. I calm down. I feel the ground under my feet. This is art therapy — my comfort zone. Why leave it when you can expand it, share it with others? That’s probably why I’m not a team player.

By training I am a graphic designer. It’s the most multidisciplinary field. From it you can jump into other areas of design with the least loss: industrial, landscape, motion, 3D, game design, animation…

The art market demands labels from me. So that my art as a whole can be summed up in two or three words, done, sold, next. We’re like at a bazaar. One artist is a plumbing stall, selling only plumbing. Another trades exclusively in hardware. And I am a shop of a thousand little things. I sell sculptures, paintings, posters, installations, 3D printing, board games. Then people come and say: «Oh, you. Haven’t found yourself yet, then. You need to pick one thing and do that. You’ve skimmed the surface and now you’re reinventing the bicycle.»

Personally I see absolutely nothing wrong with reinventing the bicycle. According to sociological surveys in the UK, the bicycle is considered humanity’s greatest invention. That’s cool. Wow, you invented the bicycle! What a brain you’ve got!

So when I want to speak about a problem, I choose the means of production starting from the problem itself, rather than stretching the problem onto my means of production. There is no greater pleasure than from good work. And no greater grief than from bad work. Art is a long-term orgasm that freezes in time.
